Update from last meeting - Everyone agrees that the Annual Meeting was a success. We liked the Davie Women’s Club location, partnering with the Farm Bureau, and the speakers, Al Will from Flamingo Gardens and Susan Smith from McKee Botanical Gardens.
Orange Blossom Festival –Feb 23 and 24th - We feel that our presence there is not benefiting the land trust. We will set up a display in the Farm Bureau tent, thanks to Fred, because John will be there and volunteered to set up a display and brochures. Uri will also be present for a part of the time.
Water Matters Day – March 10 - We are participating. Doris will tell us about that when she returns next month.
Flamingo Gardens update:
- - Al Will and the board expect DALT to help them out of their financial troubles.
- - Stan Wood is carrying the majority of the burden of management.
- - In the future, we will be fund-raising for Flamingo Gardens.
- -Conservation easement or outright purchase?
- - We will explore various opportunities for funding.
- - Marci will meet with Al Will sometime this month. They are vulnerable because if they sell it, the money will go to the church.
Other topics of discussion – Windmill – Rick was to talk with John. Need consumptive use permit?
We need to come up with some names of people that have the means to make sizeable donations and care about the environment.
Next meeting - February 4, 2013 at Pizza Loft again.

Upcoming Events:
- - Flamingo Garden Gala coming up this Sunday Feb. 10. 5:00-8:00. Planning on attending: we need to fill a table of 10: Marcie and Peter, John and Tracy, Linda, Judy and Carol, Todd and Donna and …? Motion to purchase a table - passed
- - Water Matters Day – Saturday March 9 - Doris informs us that we have a booth; the hours are 9:00-3:00 To raise some money, Fred still has some jewelry, Marcie will bring Peter’s photos and Harvey’s books if she comes. We need our own display board. Manning the booth will be Doris, Ruth, John, Marcie, Linda
- - Orange Blossom Festival – Feb 23 and 24th – John and Uri will be on Saturday Feb 23, Linda on Sunday morning 24th.
Flamingo Gardens update:
- Marcie did meet with Al Will last Monday: The land was supposed to fund the Gardens; most of the land has been sold and the money is invested. Now there’s only income from the Gardens until about August, at which point they tap into the principle. If we raise enough money for a cash infusion and it goes into an endowment account and use the interest, the income would be self-perpetuating to support the Gardens. They’re changing into a 501C3. If they sell, the Gardens dissolve.
- Al is comfortable with us creating an agreement to purchase development rights in 5-acre parcels and placement of conservation easement (can’t be developed then), creating an agreement that we would purchase 20 acres over up to 5 year increments. We would identify the acres we want, such as the ridge and the house; the trees and paths garden to west, the flamingo pond; etc.
- There is another group (Friends of Flamingo) that is raising funds and we would work together.
- We would have a position on the board. We’d be responsible for the management plan so it can never be turned into something other than what it is.
- We need an appraisal to see how much we need to raise. (an appraisal would take almost all our money). not now though, We need to keep brainstorming and expressing our concerns since we are small and financially fragile.

- B. Carol Hatton made a donation, but uncertain how much at this time.
- C.$50.00 bill for Alliance of Florida Land Trusts motion to authorize - motion to approve by John, second by Linda. Marcie will send check.
Minutes of Meeting - Ruth did not attend the last meting so there are no minutes.
Flamingo Gardens Update:
- - Marcie and Linda attended the Flamingo Gardens board meeting. They seem to be uninterested in pursuing an agreement with us after reading our MOU.
- - Their concerns:
- - - That we don’t have money to accomplish our goals; they expect to use any money we raise as they see fit; they don’t want us to be on the board; Stan doesn’t think we need an appraisal; our methods of communication are incompatible citing the MOU.
- - - They are doing well with their operations and they recently sold 2.5 acres. The meeting ended on a more relaxed tone than it started.
- - - An appraisal for a conservation easement may not be necessary since Flamingo Gardens is a non-profit. Joyce can and will find out the approximate value of the property. They will get back to us with a letter by the end of July explaining what and how much they want.
Other topics of discussion –
- - The windmill needs consumptive use state permit. John is still working on it.
- - Other areas we can look at to preserve are being sold by the South Florida Water Management District. Marcie found three parcels of interest: Deer Fence: 500 acres; SR 827 parcel, 800 acres, adjacent next to snail farm; L8 was going to be reservoir, 8712 acres is on edge of Lake Okeechobee

Treasurer’s Report: Wells Fargo – we all need to go together to update our account. The donation that Carol Hatton made is for $600. Ruth will write and send her a letter of thanks and appreciation.
Flamingo Gardens Update: Wray Board – We have not heard from them.
Other topics of discussion –
- - Urban Farming – Lauderdale Lakes’ CRA own property that they will make into community gardens. They want a conservation easement on it; it must be used for farming. Marcie has called Gary Rogers about it. CRA might pay us to hold the easement so we could have a revenue source and be an accomplishment for us.
- Palm Beach County Agricultural Reserve in western Delray – A lot of that land was supposed to be a conservation easement, but they never did it; they have developed a large portion and continue to develop it. We are probably the only group around that can hold an easement. Marcie will look into the matter
Windmill - John did hear from the Town of Davie, but now he cannot locate the paperwork.
Part-time executive director. We need a 1099 employee, an executive director for 2 years. Someone who is committed to take care of our records and follow up on our ideas, to put together the organization, strategic plan and projects; to find money to pay for what we do and earn his or her own salary. Marci has contacted FAU provost Abate for an intern; Judy will talk to BC re: public administration or business intern. Someone for 5-10 hours per month. We will discuss next month.

Introduction to Brett Waldman, our first executive director
Projects:
- - Lauderdale Lakes Community Garden - privately owned, no conservation easement on it. Brett reported on the symposium at the garden site, including the food alliance aiming to improve the food system in Broward County. Fred expressed opposition to mandatory organic gardening because of safety hazards; Marcie‘s concern is that such a project, a feeding or educational program, is getting us off our goals. We would like clarification on what they expect from us and what we can do that is consistent with our mission.
- - A photographer’s 4 acres of land on the west coast - if he placed a conservation easement on it, his tax liability would decrease allowing him to retain the property. Maybe us?
Annual meeting 12-3:00 with Farm Bureau at the lodge in Robbins Park on Sunday, November 3, 2013.
